Frequently Asked Questions

Answers about generation, storage, privacy, exports, and common problems.

Passwords and passphrases

What is the difference between a password and a passphrase?

A password mixes characters and symbols. A passphrase combines randomly selected words separated by hyphens. Passphrases are often easier to type and remember while remaining strong when enough words are used.

What lengths should I use?

Use at least 16 characters for a general-purpose password when a service permits it. For EFF-wordlist passphrases, six or more randomly selected words provide a strong default.

How does “No repeating chars” work?

When enabled in Password mode, every character in the generated password is unique. If the selected character pool is too small for the requested length, Passtation asks you to adjust the constraints.

How are credentials generated?

Passtation uses the browser's Web Crypto API for cryptographically secure random selection. Passphrases use the 7,776-word EFF Long Wordlist.

Vault and exports

Where are saved credentials stored?

They are stored in the current browser profile using localStorage. They are not synchronized between browsers or devices.

Is the vault encrypted?

No. Passtation does not encrypt localStorage. Use a dedicated password manager for important long-term storage.

What happens if I clear browser data?

The vault may be deleted permanently. Passtation cannot recover local data it never receives.

Are exported files protected?

No. CSV, TXT, and PDF exports contain readable credentials. Store them securely and delete unneeded copies.

Privacy and connectivity

Does Passtation receive my credentials?

No. Generation and vault storage happen in your browser. Routine website and CDN connection logs do not include generated credentials or vault contents.

Does Passtation use tracking or analytics?

No. Passtation does not use analytics, tracking cookies, or an account system.

Does everything work offline?

Generation uses local project files. Icons and the PDF-export library are loaded from a content delivery network, so those features may require a connection unless the resources were already cached.

Troubleshooting

I do not see Passphrase mode. What should I do?

Make sure the newest versions of index.html, script.js, styles.css, and eff-wordlist.js are on the server. Clear any hosting or CDN cache, then perform a hard browser refresh.

Why is PDF export unavailable?

PDF export depends on the html2pdf library loaded from the CDN. Check the connection, content-security settings, and whether the CDN request was blocked.

Why is Read Aloud unavailable?

Read Aloud depends on the browser and device providing a compatible speech voice. If no voice is available or speech synthesis fails, use the on-screen pronunciation guide instead.

Why are icons missing?

The main interface icons use Font Awesome from a CDN. The generator still functions if those decorative icons fail to load.
